Fascinating facts about Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence has received a great deal of attention in recent times. From email servers that eliminate junk or spam mail to Apple’s Siri, our lives are getting more and more intertwined with AI. Recent innovations in AI technology forecast a future where machines will have the capacity to perform advanced cognitive functions, process languages, decipher human emotions and become proficient in learning, planning and performing tasks as an intelligent system.
Smart Machines can change the world for the better but come with their fair share of challenges such as machine accountability, security, displacement of human workers and so on. It will require a step by step approach to tackle these challenges and embrace the infinite possibilities AI brings with it. For the time being, here are some amazing (and slightly scary) facts about Artificial Intelligence.
1. IT DID NOT START TODAY
The idea of AI is not new. The Turing test, developed by Alan Turing in 1950, is a test of a machine's ability to display intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human. Today he is known as the father of AI.
2. THE AI MARKET IS WORTH A LOT OF MONEY….. A LOT!!
A PwC report estimates that AI will contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. The self-driving car market alone is expected to be worth $127 billion by 2027. This is mostly driven by AI technology.
3. MOST OF WHAT YOU BUY ARE SUGGESTED TO YOU BY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Some E-Commerce sites use a technique called Machine Learning systems to recommend products and best deals to customers. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says the company uses this method on its platform and this will soon influence other aspects of the business.
4. HUMANS ARE STILL SMARTER THE AI – FOR NOW!
Some researchers expect artificial intelligence systems to be only one-tenth as smart as a human by 2035. This is expected to change by 2060 when it is predicted AI will perform nearly all human tasks, producing even better results.
5. MOST AI ARE FEMALE
Siri, Cortana, Alexa – These are the popular AI known to us and they are all female voices. There is no clear reason why this takes place, but some researchers say that the female voice is less threatening and both male and female consumers feel more comfortable with the feminine AI.
